The Dark Preview, volume 5 is a poster-pamphlet, with texts by Rut Blees Luxemburg, Casper Laing Ebbensgaard, Lo Marshall and Nick Dunn; and artwork (photo-collage) by Chooc Ly Tan. I made this epic collage using clips from home-made photographs (night strolling in my hometown, collected photos from parties, etc.) and found images. I wanted to recreate the sensation of time-travelling that I feel when at home or at certain parties. I get nostalgic when I go home, but it also has a number of futuristic backdrops with architecture made of reflective materials, housing projects and bridges connecting different hoods. Socio-politically there is a melancholia to this urban landscape, which I've tried to juxtapose with the exuberance of the dancefloor. Syncopation is a technique used in music, primarily developed by musicians from the African diaspora, to bring rhythm to life by making the accent fall on the offbeat. The film explores the wider sense of syncopation, as a disturbance and subversion of regular patterns - in social movements; in our experience and perception of time; in self organising systems (such as bee communication); and in creative processes in dance (such as Vogue Fem), music, sound art, poetry and cooking. It presents the work of five people from the diasporic and queer community, all based in London. Through interviews they give us different perspectives on what syncopation means in their lived experience, multi-disciplinary practices and research. The film spans multiple historic and contemporary narratives of displacement and resistance, resonating with our current condition of interruption and delay. On The Offbeat is an iridescent journey exploring syncopation as a transformative form of disruption that unsettles normative codes and breathes life back into daily rhythms. Immediately, among the few common denominators that emerged, I could quote: "transgression", "optimism", "collective experience (and transformation)”. Here is a photo-montage composed of a self-portrait – me at high altitude (holding a handrail), with the presence of Europa, the scribbled moon orbiting Jupiter. The piece also features hand-drawn creatures that face existential, gravitational, and cosmic challenges. The work pulses across generations with contributions from Louiza Benrezzak who reads extracts from her father’s poetry, the artists’ sister Dijana Tan, childhood friend Ida Macondo, cousins San Sokchea, Thmey Cheanich (filmed by the artists cousin San bun Theon from his smartphone), Fériel Boushaki, and Martial and friends as they make spring rolls.&nbsp; With a grand optimism, interviewees reflect on the aftermath of colonialism and on-going neo-colonialisms, touching upon the complexities of prejudice today, that include exoticism within popular culture, whilst foregrounding current, and future projects and aspirations of the contributors. Part educational, part experimental documentary, the work emerges from lived experience as much as from research.&nbsp; A speculative thinking that syncopates online news articles with excerpts from
