The project takes its name from words spoken by indigenous activist Txai Suruí, from the ancestral lands of the Paiter Suruí people in the Amazon rainforest: 'The Earth is Speaking’. The series comprises three short 3D-animated films, each paired with an original music release. I write, direct and score all three. The film is set in the near future, in a rainforest. It follows a mantis and a human with living sea anemone hair as they move through a landscape of eye-popping botany. The story investigates natural nonhuman phenomena — symbiosis*, crypsis**, bioluminescence — alongside themes of ongoing colonial exploitation and trauma at many different scales. The story is saturated with references to the distant past and the far future, the microscopic and the cosmic. It is an optimistic film in which the extractive exploitation of nature is overcome, but it is not a naive return to the pristine wilderness. Instead, it is an exercise in critical world-building, asking what forms of life might emerge from the ruins of capitalist destruction. FOREST COSMOS introduced a new methodology for my own practice: using moving image as a visual annotation for music composition — treating the film itself as a music score. Rather than composing music to illustrate the image, I let the image directly shape the composition's sounds, rhythms and processes. This approach enabled me to converge different strands of my practice in one project: moving image, world-building and music production. The EP scores FOREST COSMOS. Rather than functioning as conventional film music, it operates as an expanded sonic environment that interacts with the film's speculative world-building. Throughout, I worked to translate rainforest life and phenomena into a sonic landscape that moves from micro-listening to cinematic scale. Sound composition provides a sensorial method for engaging with ecological thinking: through recording, improvisation and digital transformation, natural forces are rendered as sonic environments that invite listeners to experience ecological processes differently. The experimentation in the score pushed my practice further than it had gone before: voice as instrument and for sound design, subverting foley through unexpected sound-image associations, turntablism as compositional technique, granular processing, musique concrète pushed to unanticipated places. The Korg Monotron mirrors a praying mantis's movements. Keys through overdrive become an apocalyptic tremor. My voice, amplified and pitch-bent, becomes turbulence or the scream of many dispossessed spirits. Field recordings go in raw or come back unrecognisable. My music synthesises the worldly and the unworldly — concrete noise with abstract sound, classical instrumentation with frenetic beats, intimate vocals with alien soundscapes. An attempt to think differently through music, to imagine another possible world. Emotion plays an important role in this process. By mobilising affect within the music, the work seeks to echo the listeners' sense of interconnectedness with the natural world, while foregrounding the gravity of ongoing colonial aftermaths and the urgency of addressing these forces at both systemic and environmental levels. To expand on the film's conceptual and discursive scope, I have commissioned five writers to respond to FOREST COSMOS: Hannah Catherine Jones, april forrest lin 林森, Jacob V Joyce, Sam Sivapragasam (LION), and Inigo Wilkins — each bringing a distinct critical perspective, from land justice and trans embodiment to sonic practice, interspecies thinking and audio-visual and institutional decolonisation. These personal and political threads connect to broader geopolitical realities, binding the geological to the colonial. For this soundscape, I drew inspiration from my fascination with natural phenomena and volcanic activities, which led me to live in Iceland from 2007 to 2009. This formative period, near the Arctic Circle, has helped me get an insight on the ongoing aftermath and damages resulting from the Danish colonisation of Greenland which I refer to in the soundscape. I was also inspired by my own experience of injustice — my parents were refugees from Vietnam and Cambodia — as well as my ongoing research on the work of indigenous and diasporic activists, and conversations I had with friends, spotlighting certain geopolitical factors – ongoing imperialist exploitations – in places like the DRC and Greenland which are rich in natural ressources.For this performance, and more broadly, DJing kits has been a means for audio-collaging, story-telling, and most recently, a tool for music composition. In Earth Friction: Geological Forces_Forced Nature, I wanted to gel the sonic ingredients cohesively together with electronic beats and beeps, bass and anger, using intense industrial/noise sound and vocals (listen below). The Dark Preview, volume 5 is a poster-pamphlet, with texts by Rut Blees Luxemburg, Casper Laing Ebbensgaard, Lo Marshall and Nick Dunn; and artwork (photo-collage) by Chooc Ly Tan. I made this epic collage using clips from home-made photographs (night strolling in my hometown, collected photos from parties, etc.) and found images. I wanted to recreate the sensation of time-travelling that I feel when at home or at certain parties. I get nostalgic when I go home, but it also has a number of futuristic backdrops with architecture made of reflective materials, housing projects and bridges connecting different hoods. Socio-politically there is a melancholia to this urban landscape, which I've tried to juxtapose with the exuberance of the dancefloor. Syncopation is a technique used in music, primarily developed by musicians from the African diaspora, to bring rhythm to life by making the accent fall on the offbeat. The film explores the wider sense of syncopation, as a disturbance and subversion of regular patterns - in social movements; in our experience and perception of time; in self organising systems (such as bee communication); and in creative processes in dance (such as Vogue Fem), music, sound art, poetry and cooking. It presents the work of five people from the diasporic and queer community, all based in London. Through interviews they give us different perspectives on what syncopation means in their lived experience, multi-disciplinary practices and research. The film spans multiple historic and contemporary narratives of displacement and resistance, resonating with our current condition of interruption and delay. On The Offbeat is an iridescent journey exploring syncopation as a transformative form of disruption that unsettles normative codes and breathes life back into daily rhythms. Immediately, among the few common denominators that emerged, I could quote: "transgression", "optimism", "collective experience (and transformation)”. Here is a photo-montage composed of a self-portrait – me at high altitude (holding a handrail), with the presence of Europa, the scribbled moon orbiting Jupiter. The piece also features hand-drawn creatures that face existential, gravitational, and cosmic challenges. The work pulses across generations with contributions from Louiza Benrezzak who reads extracts from her father’s poetry, the artists’ sister Dijana Tan, childhood friend Ida Macondo, cousins San Sokchea, Thmey Cheanich (filmed by the artists cousin San bun Theon from his smartphone), Fériel Boushaki, and Martial and friends as they make spring rolls.&nbsp; With a grand optimism, interviewees reflect on the aftermath of colonialism and on-going neo-colonialisms, touching upon the complexities of prejudice today, that include exoticism within popular culture, whilst foregrounding current, and future projects and aspirations of the contributors. Part educational, part experimental documentary, the work emerges from lived experience as much as from research.&nbsp; A speculative thinking that syncopates online news articles with excerpts from Meteoric Mix is a site-specific performance devised by myself, and energised by Stormy (breakdancer),Dove Prodigy (Vogue dancer), Audrey Lauro (saxophonist), and Lionel Dury (barstaff). The piece explores the shifting meaning of chemistry applicable in mixology, dance, music and collective transformation.The piece references the hybrid and reactive nature of chemical associations, by including a dance battle, cocktail consumptionand an explosive phenomenon.
