FOREST COSMOS is a speculative 3D animated film set in the near future. It launches The Earth is Speaking series, in which the artist converges different strands of their practice – moving image and music composition, into world-building.
In FOREST COSMOS, the story follows a Vietnamese mantis and a human with living sea anemone hair as they move through a rainforest of eye-popping botany. The story explores natural phenomena such as symbiosis*, crypsis**, and bioluminescence, alongside themes of ongoing colonial exploitation and memory. The film drifts between the microscopic and the cosmic, questioning how nonhuman beings might perceive time and space.
*‘Symbiosis’ refers to a mutual relationship or cooperation between different species, such as when organisms depend on one another to survive.
**‘Crypsis’ describes the ability to blend into the environment — camouflage or invisibility — as a survival strategy.
With the upcoming commissioned texts' response to the film by:
Hannah Catherine Jones, april forrest lin 林森, Jacob V Joyce, Sam Sivapragasam and Inigo Wilkins.
With the support of the Art Department Research, Goldsmiths University.
